Breaking down the microbiology world one bite at a time

Nina R. Montoya, PhD

Writer

I have a PhD in Cellular & Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, a certificate in Public Health, and a love of all things science communication. My dissertation research focused on mechanisms of immune evasion by the pediatric bacterial pathogen, Kingella kingae. Since leaving academia, I’ve worked as a freelance
science writer and a Program Manager in Life Sciences at The New York Academy of Sciences.

I’m passionate about championing the work of underrepresented scientists and helping them tell scientific stories to diverse audiences. I love using elements of graphic design, writing, and film to describe novel scientific research in an engaging and beautiful way.

Outside of science, I’m a foodie, a Pilates addict, and the happy owner of a very adorable, yet slightly anxious, Australian cattle dog named Chips!
